Alivar Barcelona Day Bed

Mies Van Der Rohe Day bed | Alivar Museum | Article 337

Alivar Barcelona day bed: Frame in solid wood stained walnut, black or white. Legs in chrome-plated tubular steel. Mattress and headrest in polyurethane and synthetic fibers, covered in leather. Hide straps. It was first used in the New York apartment of Philip Johnson for which it was probably designed. However, it made its first public appearance at the Berlin Building Exposition of 1931 (Berlin Bau-Austellung) in the model bachelor's apartment. The strap and cushion details are similar to those of the "Barcelona Chair". This cushion detailing was probably a contribution of Lilly Reich. Upholstered in synthetic or genuine leather.
