Tugendhat Chair – A Rare Modernist Masterpiece by Mies van der Rohe

Designed in 1929–1930 for the renowned Tugendhat House in Brno, Czechoslovakia, the Tugendhat Chair is a testament to Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s mastery of both architecture and furniture design. Intended as a more comfortable evolution of the Barcelona Chair, this piece introduced a cantilevered form that merged elegance with everyday functionality.

A Living Room Redefined

Commissioned for the living room of an upper-class modernist residence, the Tugendhat Chair broke with tradition. Rather than relying on heavily upholstered forms, Mies introduced a design that expressed openness and structural clarity—without compromising comfort. Three of these chairs originally accompanied three Barcelona Chairs (model 334) in the iconic interior of the Tugendhat House.

Though Mies passed on production rights to Thonet, neither the flat steel nor tubular steel versions were commercialized at that time. It wasn't until 1964 that an armless version in flat steel was briefly produced—discontinued again by the early 1980s. Today, this chair is available exclusively through select authorized reproductions, making it one of the rarest commercially available Mies designs.
