Mies van der Rohe Lounge Armchair
A modernist icon, refined for repose.
Designed in 1931, this lounge interpretation of Mies van der Rohe’s pioneering cantilever chair distills the principles of modern architecture into an object of effortless balance—where structure, material, and comfort exist in perfect equilibrium.
Design Overview
Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s cantilever chair, first conceived in 1926–27, stands among the most radical achievements of modern design. By eliminating the rear legs, Mies transformed the chair into a continuous structural gesture—one that appears to float, supported by the inherent strength of tubular steel.
This lower, lounge version debuted at the Berlin Building Exhibition (Bau-Ausstellung) in 1931, distinguished by its continuous roll-and-pleat cushion. The upholstery concept is widely attributed to Lilly Reich, Mies’ close collaborator and an essential figure in the development of modern interiors. Together, their work fused architectural rigor with a nuanced understanding of comfort and materiality.
