Gerald Summers Armchair
A singular expression of modernist innovation, shaped by hand and history.
Designed in 1929 and realized during a pivotal moment in British modernism, this armchair embodies Gerald Summers’ radical pursuit of functional beauty—where material, form, and purpose converge into one continuous gesture.
Design Overview
Gerald Summers was among the earliest designer-producers to define modern furniture through practicality, restraint, and material honesty. With the founding of Makers of Simple Furniture Ltd. in 1929, Summers positioned himself at the forefront of a movement that sought clarity over ornament.
This armchair, produced in 1943, represents the pinnacle of that philosophy. Formed from a single, uninterrupted sheet of bent plywood, its fluid, swept-back silhouette evokes both aerodynamic precision and an early expression of what would later be described as organic or biomorphic design. Unlike the multi-component constructions of his contemporaries, Summers’ approach here is radical in its simplicity—one material, one gesture, one idea.
Only 120 examples were ever produced, rendering the design exceptionally rare and highly sought after by collectors today.
Craftsmanship & Materials
The armchair is crafted from a beech plywood structure, overlaid with a refined layer of birch and finished using traditional Italian techniques.

Beech plywood frame with birch outer layer
-
Natural or closed-pore lacquered finish
-
Precision shaping that maintains structural integrity while achieving visual lightness
This method of construction demands exceptional control and expertise, allowing the material itself to define the chair’s character, strength, and tactile warmth.
Customization
Available finishes are intentionally restrained to preserve the integrity of the original design.
